Does staying healthy feel like a full time job?

The more you learn about health, fitness, and longevity, the longer your to-do list seems to get.

If fitness was your only job (and Nike was cutting you a check), adding more habits might be fine. But for the rest of us—those juggling careers, families, and everything else life throws our way—time is limited.

And… more is not always better!

So what should you actually be doing? What’s going to give you the biggest health impact in the least amount of time?

Most people don’t know. That uncertainty leads to two common outcomes: doing nothing or cycling through workout phases that burn you out without really getting anywhere.

That might not seem like a big deal right now. But what happens when “not getting anywhere” turns into years or even decades?

The Longevity Benchmark

Did you know that your VO2 Max, the measurement of your aerobic fitness, is the number one predictor of how long you will live?

It outperforms smoking, weight, BMI, and even diet when it comes to forecasting life expectancy.

That means that if you don’t get anywhere now and you become deconditioned, you have a much greater chance of a shorter lifespan and more importantly, a shorter health span – losing independence and functionality earlier than you would otherwise.

If your VO2 Max is high, you’ll have the energy and endurance to enjoy life on your terms—hiking, traveling, staying active with loved ones, etc.

If it’s low, the future looks very different. Loss of independence. Struggles with everyday movement. Relying on others to get around.

I’ve seen it firsthand in my work as a physical therapist. The difference between thriving and depending on others often comes down to fitness—specifically, aerobic capacity.

The good news? VO2 Max is trainable.

That leaves you with two choices:

1️⃣  Follow general exercise guidelines, hope your VO2 Max improves, and spend time guessing.
2️⃣ Measure it directly, see where you stand, and determine if it is something you need to address. If it is, use the results to train with precision to get the best results in the least amount of time. Then re-test as needed to confirm progress.

Until recently, only elite athletes had access to VO2 Max testing—it required expensive lab equipment.

Now, Embody to Empower is bringing this game-changing technology to Boulder at a price that makes sense.

If you want to maximize your health, performance, and longevity, this is where you start.

VO2 Max

Know Your Number

You’ll have a precise measurement of your VO2 max – the single most important metric in health and longevity.

Not only will you know your number, but your performance will be benchmarked against age and gender matched peers.

That way you’ll also know if your performance is above-average, or if you have some work to do.

Personalized Training Zones

Know YOUR Zone

To create an effective exercise plan, you need to determine your target heart rate zone for each workout.

But did you know that the zones programmed into your smart watch, or that you find online are just estimates.

They are reasonable guesses, but really they’re one size fits none.

In addition to VO2 max, our testing process will calculate the exact numbers for your training zones, which will eliminate the guesswork so you can get the most out of each training session.

VT1 and VT2 Measurement

Performance Thresholds

To maximize your fitness results, it’s useful to know two additional metrics providing insight about how your body responds to various intensities of exercise. These are both determined by changes in your breathing patterns through breath analysis.

The first, your VT1,  is when you start to transition from using predominantly “aerobic” energy systems to an increasing reliance on the   “anaerobic” energy systems. Directly before this point your bodies fat metabolism is at it’s highest. This is the point where you start moving away from utilizing primarily fat as a fuel and begin relying more on carbohydrates.

The second, your VT2, is when your ability to sustain the effort becomes very difficult.

Knowing this number can help you in race situations judge how deep into fatigue you and push, while still being able to sustain your pace for an extended period of time. It is an indicator of your top end.

This measures can directly guide how to build the most efficient and effective training program for your particular goals.

Comprehensive Reporting

Data…Lots of Data!

Not only will you get the high level summary of your test results, but if you want it, you’ll also be given every bit of data we collected for you- several spreadsheets worth.

For many, this is far more information than you’ll need.

But for others, especially if you are working with a performance coach, this data provides an opportunity for deep analysis.

Not everyone is going to be a right fit for VO2 max testing

Who is VO2 Max Testing For?

You’re a good fit for VO2 Max Testing if:

You are healthy enough (and brave enough!) to do a maximal exercise test

You need to know exactly where you stand in your health and fitness

You want to know exactly what heart rate zones you should exercise in

You want to track meaningful improvements in your health and fitness

You want to make sure each minute spent exercising delivers the most benefit possible

You want to invest in your body, the same way you invest in your retirement, to increase the likelihood of a longer, more fulfilling life

You’re not a good fit for VO2 Max Testing if:

You have a medical condition that makes strenuous exercise tests dangerous

You kind of want to know where you stand, but you don’t really (because if you know, then you may have to do something about it!)

You feel like you can reach your goal without personalized health data informing your training plan.

You don’t feel like you need a number this precise to benchmark your health and fitness.

❌ You aren’t looking to maximize the efficiency of your training program.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

I’m not a serious athlete, is VO2 Max testing for me?

Yes! Your VO2 Max is a very important number for your health and longevity. Knowing where you stand is key to making sure you are on track for your health goals.

It is similar to retirement investing. If you want to know you are on track, you need to periodically check the state of your portfolio and make adjustments as necessary.

Checking your VO2 Max now is like checking the state of your physical portfolio so you either have the confidence that you can continue on your current path, or identify issues and start addressing them.

I am a serious athlete, is VO2 Max testing for me?

Yes! Knowing your VO2 max will let you know exactly where you stand related to your goals. We know what your VO2 max should be to compete at different levels in different sports.

Once you know your number, it is very easy to see where you stand. And with repeat testing, you can precisely measure the effectiveness of your training program.

Can’t I just use my Apple watch or other fitness tracker to get my VO2 max?

That is an option, however you should be aware that the number that your Apple watch or other fitness trackers provide you are an estimate not a measurement. And often the estimates aren’t very good.

My husband did the VO2 max test, and found that his Apple watch was off by over 30%! VO2 max testing is the gold standard and far superior to any estimate derived by an algorithm.

Who should not do a VO2 Max Test?

The test requires you to exercise to your maximal ability. If you have any medical condition that makes this dangerous for you, then the risk is greater than the benefit of the data.

Refund Policy

Once the test has been completed, we can’t offer a refund. If there is a technical issue during testing that compromises the data collected we will either offer a re-test at no additional cost, or refund a portion of your money depending on how much data was compromised.

What Is the Testing Process for VO2 Max

To calculate your VO2 Max and other health metrics, you will do what is called a graded exercise tolerance testing wearing a mask that measures the air you breathe in and out.

You will also wear a heart rate monitor to collect heart rate data.

The most common tests are done on a stationary bike or a treadmill.

You will start the test pedaling/walking/jogging at an easy pace for you.

Then at the prescribed intervals, the intensity will get progressively more challenging.

This will continue until you are no longer able to continue the test.  At that point the test is over.

Is the test uncomfortable?

The test will make you exercise…hard. So it can be uncomfortable, or intense in that way. If you train regularly, it will feel like a very hard workout.

Where is the test performed?

Embody to Empower partners with Functional Fitness and Wellness in Boulder and can perform the test there on either a stationary “Stages” bike, using your own bike on a our specialized bike trainer, or using a treadmill.

Are there other options for testing beside biking, like running, swimming, etc?

For the time being, Embody to Empower is only offering the test on a bike and treadmill. However if you are interested in other forms of testing, please reach out. I have plans to incorporate more testing options in the future.

What Happens Once I Buy

When you click one of the “Get Started” buttons, you will be taken to a page where you will be able to select a testing time and pay for the test.

Once you’ve gone through the scheduling and payment process, you’ll receive and email with all the details you’ll need to be ready for your testing day.

If you do not see a time that works for you, please contact me and I will see what arrangements can be made.
